'Animal Therapy Helps Dementia Patients'

According to an article by Everyday Health titled 'How Animal Therapy Helps Dementia Patients,' research has shown there to be numerous benefits by incorporating pet therapy into the lives of those suffering with Alzheimer’s. It can relax patients and provides them with an alternative form of interaction. While the interaction may not be aimed at humans, the important aspect is that it provides them another outlet to communicate which is often hard for those with dementia.  Bright Horizons at Carondelet utilizes pet therapy with their outgoing and gentle therapy dog, Dude, a Therapy Dog International certified King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and Poodle mix. Dude’s weekly visit to Carondelet is always anticipated by members and there is a mutual excitement between the members and Dude when he trots through the door. He does funny tricks for the members, such as sneezing on command, but he also is eager to comfort and relax members who prefer to just pet him and stroke his soft fur.
